Your dog’s ideal shape
What is Body Condition Score (BCS)?
Even at the same weight, frame size differs by breed and individual, so weight alone is a poor guide to fatness.
Body Condition Score (BCS) is a standard way to assess condition.
Aim for BS3—ideal—through diet and exercise.
BS1
Very thin
Ribs, spine and hip bones are easy to see. Almost no fat when palpated. Strong waist tuck and abdominal tuck.
BS2
Thin
Ribs easy to feel. Clear waist from above and abdominal tuck from the side.
BS3
Ideal
Ribs palpable without excess fat covering. Visible waist behind ribs from above; abdominal tuck from the side.
BS4
Overweight
Some fat cover but ribs still palpable. Waist visible from above but subtle. Belly slightly rounded.
BS5
Obese
Ribs hard to feel under heavy fat. Fat over spine and lumbar area. Waist absent or barely visible. Belly hangs or bulges.
